The Curvature of the Earth is Overwhelmed by Local Noise Nomic
Archive of Game Two
The second Game was officially declared open on
July 14, 2000,
with these Rules:
Rule 1
The Official Domain consists of ordered pairs of
integers between zero and fifteen (inclusive);
the Official Range consists of
the integers zero and one; the Official Mapping consists of a mapping from the
Official Domain to the Official Range. Initially, the Official Mapping maps
each element of the Official Domain into zero.
The Official Tableau is a 2-dimensional visual representation of the Official
Mapping.
Rule 2
Any person (or other apparently sentient entity,
including the scribe) in the universe may take part in this game by sending
a Valid Move to the Scribe.
Rule 3 A Valid Move consists of an email message or something
typed into one of those little input-boxes on the Scribe's website,
clearly marked as a move, and containing either a Rule Change
Suggestion, or a Mapping Modification Suggestion.
Rule 4 A Rule Change Suggestion consists of the
string "I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules" (or
reasonable equivalent), followed by a clear and explicit
description of one or more changes to one or more existing
Rules, the deletion of one or more existing Rules, or the
creation of one or more new Rules.
Rule 5 A Mapping Modification Suggestion consists
of the string "I suggest the following modification to the
Mapping" (or reasonable equivalent), followed by a description
clearly and unambiguously picking out a single member of the
Official Domain, and specifying a new member of the Official Range
to which that member of the Official Domain should be mapped.
Rule 6 Once a week, or whenever he or she feels like it,
the Scribe shall select one of the Valid Moves that have been
sent and not yet applied, and apply it.
Applying a Valid Move containing a
Rule Change Suggestion consists of changing the rules as specified
in the Suggestion.
Applying a Valid Move containing a
Mapping Modification Suggestion consists of changing the Mapping
as specified in the Suggestion.
Rule 7 Not very long after Applying a Valid Move,
the Scribe shall
make available on his or her website a copy of the Move, and
the current state of the Rules and Official Tableau.
Rule 8 The Scribe is David M. Chess.
Rule 9
All entities participating in the current Nomic, regardless of the
level of participation, shall be encouraged to brush and floss every morning
and night. The minimum amount of encouragement to be given to the above
mentioned entities is this rule itself.
Rule 10
Whenever a new Rule is created, it shall be assigned the smallest
integer that is not currently assigned to any Rule, unless it is
created as the result of a Rule Change Suggestion that explicitly
specifies a different number, in which case it shall be assigned
the number specified in the Suggestion.
On 20 July 2000 the
following moves were applied:
I suggest the following
change(s) to the Rules:
Change Rule 10 to read as follows:
Rule 10 Whenever a new Rule is created, it shall be assigned the smallest positive
integer that is not currently assigned to any Rule, unless it is created as the result
of a Rule Change Suggestion that explicitly specifies a different number, in which case
it shall be assigned the number specified in the Suggestion.
I suggest the following
change(s) to the Rules:
We must all inhale deeply through the nose and exhale through the mouth.
We shall breath within certain rhythmic cycles and shall not be afraid to cover
our bodies in rare and exotic spices.
I suggest the following
change(s) to the Rules:
The scribe must not wear a special ceremonial hat whilst whether or not to
apply a valid move.
I suggest the following
change(s) to the Rules:
The name of this nomic shall be "The Curvature of the Earth is Overwhelmed by
Local Noise Nomic"
I suggest the following
change(s) to the Rules:
This change consists of two steps:
Step 1: The text of the existing Rule 5 shall be copied as a new rule.
Step 2: Rule 5 shall be replaced by the following text:
"There is no Rule Five".
I suggest the
following modification to the Mapping:
D(7,7) = 1
On 27 July 2000 the
following moves were applied:
I suggest the following
modification to the mapping:
D(7,8)=1
I suggest the following
modification to the mapping:
D(4,4)=1
I suggest the following change(s)
to the Rules:
Add a rule reading: "The game is complete when a nomic move
creates an exact replica of a Space Invaders enemy in the Tableau."
I suggest the following change(s)
to the Rules:
All odd prime numbered rules will have the phrase
"Or so they would have you believe." appended at the end of the rule.
All even numbered prime numbered rules shall have the phrase
"The monkeys will then dance."
The latter move was interpreted as a one-time instantaneous change
to the existing rules, not as the creation of a new rule.
On 8 August 2000 the
following moves were applied:
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
That the wording of Rule 15 be changed as follows: the words "exact replica" changed
to "exact monochrome replica". (I think they were in color, and you don't really want
this game to be infinite / add color to the mapping, do you?)
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
Any Rule Change Suggestion submitted on a Monday is assumed to be flawed.
Accordingly, any such Suggestion may be applied only if the suggested rule
is first negated, e.g. by replacing "shall" with "shall not" and vice versa,
et cetera.
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
Any Rule Change Suggestion submitted on a Friday is assumed to be perfect.
Accordingly, any rule created or amended by any such Suggestion shall be designated
a "Friday Rule" and may later be amended or repealed only by another Rule Change
Suggestion submitted on a Friday.
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
Change Rule 14 to read: A Mapping Modification Suggestion consists of the string
"I suggest the following modification(s) to the Mapping" (or reasonable equivalent),
followed by a description clearly and unambiguously picking out one or more members
of the Official Domain, and specifying a new member of the Official Range to which
each of those members of the Official Domain should be mapped.
I suggest the following modification(s) to the Mapping
D(4,11) = 1
The new Rule about Mondays was interpreted as requiring, but not
authorizing, the negating of something in Rule Change Suggestions
submitted on Mondays before applying them, and therefore as making
it, for the time being, impossible to apply any such moves.
On 18 August 2000 the
following move was applied:
I suggest the following modification(s) to the Mapping:
d(11,6-9)=1, d(10,5)=1, d(10,10)= 1
resulting in a silly smiling face in the Tableau.
On 23 September 2000 the
following moves were applied, in this order:
I suggest the following modification(s) to the Mapping:
invert (0,0)
Whenever a new rule is created and that rule's number is a multiple of 5,
the Official Mapping shall be transformed by applying one iteration of
John Conway's game of life. [created a Friday Rule]
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
The scribe may, at his option, first negate any rule change suggestion before
applying it. [made it once more possible to apply moves submitted on Mondays]
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
That any Rule Change be considered invalid if it contains a grammatical error.
And that if the Scribe adds grammatical
errors to Rule Changes, he must wear a special ceremonial hat while covering
his body in rare exotic spices, but not if he's flossing or it's a Friday.
He shall also inhale through the mouth and exhale shallowly through the nose
3 times for every error thus introduced. [submitted on a Monday, and
thus negated before being applied; created a rule 20, and caused a
Conway step in the Tableau/Mapping]
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
that the word "deciding" be inserted in Rule 12 between "whilst" and "whether",
thus making it a correct English sentence. (I know I'm nitpicky)
[also submitted on a Monday, and had no effect after negation]
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
Friday Rule: That odd numbers be considered Evil and even numbers be considered
Pure and Good. That all new rules only get Good Even numbers, and that the existing
rules get numbers that equal their current number * 2, thus also giving them Good,
Even numbers.
That on days of the month that have odd numbers and thus are Evil, every one
shall repent and breathe in deeply an even number of times before submitting
a rule to this nomic. [created a Friday rule, and renumbered all existing rules]
Due to a conflict about Rule numbering between the resulting Rule 20 and Rule 42,
it became temporarily impossible to apply suggestions that would create new
rules without specifying even numbers for them.
On 9 December 2000 the
following moves were applied, in this order:
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
The text of rule 10 is replaced with:
Should there exist a conflict, paradox, or other such conundrum caused
by two or more rules, that conflict is resolved by giving precedence
to higher numbered rules over lower numbered rules.
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
The sentence "Any action taken by the scribe which is not correct is
definitively incorrect." is appended to rule 16.
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
The phrase "whilst whether" shall not be replaced by the phrase
"whilst deciding whether" wherever it appears in the rules.
[Submitted on a Monday, and negated before Applying.]
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
The text of rule 20 shall be deleted, and in its place, the following text inserted:
Whenever a new rule is created, it shall be assigned the smallest positive integer
allowable by the rules, unless it is created as the result of a Rule Change Suggestion
that explicitly specifies a different number, in which case it shall be assigned the
number specified in the Suggestion. No two rules may have the same rule number.
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
There shall not be established an official set. The official set shall not
be a set of strings. The official set shall not initially be {official, set}.
Whenever a new rule is created, the official set shall not be changed to the
union of the official set and the set of the first word of the new rule.
This rule shall repeal itself whenever the official set is the empty set.
Any new rule resulting from this suggestion shall not be given rule numer 74.
[Submitted on a Monday, and negated before Applying.]
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
Should the Scribe be unable or unwilling to apply valid moves,
e may select any
other entity to perform this duty instead.
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
No Rule Change Suggestion submitted on a holiday may be applied, unless the
suggestion contains a phrase appropriate to the holiday.
There are no holidays not explicitly defined in the rules.
These are holidays:
01/29 - Old Ceolnn Independence Day
04/01 - April Fools' Day
07/14 - Ceolnn Independence Day
10/01 - Palindrome Day
10/24 - David Chess Day
11/13 - Paradox of Self-Amendment Day
[submitted on a Friday]
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
No animal shall sleep on a bed with sheets [submitted on a Friday]
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
Roman numerals shall be accepted as the official numbering system of this nomic.
All numbers currently used or subsequently introduced into this nomic shall be
expressed in Roman numerals, except in such cases as this rule does not have the
power to affect them.
This rule shall be given rule number XC.
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
All changes to the Rules from here on must begin with a haiku.
All modifications to the mapping must end with a couplet.
[submitted on a Friday]
Friday Rules already present at the adoption of the Roman Numeral Rule were
unchanged (left with their numbers expressed in conventional numbering), whereas
the Friday Rule enacted after the Roman Numeral Rule (the haiku/couplet Rule)
was numbered L.
Due to the creation of new Rules numbered XC and L, two generations of Conway's
Life were run on the Tableau.
On 15 February 2001 the
following move was applied:
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
Frigid howling winds
Bring winter to our doorstep
Nomic stirs again
New rule:
For purposes of this game, the word "here" is defined to mean
"this lexical point in the ruleset."
This suggests that Rule Modification Suggestions that modify Rules
prior to Rule L need not start with a haiku.
On 16 February 2001 the
following move was applied:
I suggest the following modification(s) to the Mapping:
(X, IX) = I
(X, VIII) = 0
(XI, VII) = I
Julius Ceasar, I think you're a snot.
And I don't care if you like me or not.
Resulting in a glider (not, as originally written in this space,
"a cute stable pentomino") in the Tableau.
On 18 February 2001 the
following move was applied:
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
Whenever the scribe
adds a rule to the nomic
e gets VII points.
Whenever a generation of life is run, John Conway is awarded XX points.
Introducing the concept of "points" into the game for the first time.
On 19 February 2001 the
following move was applied:
I suggest the following modification(s) to the Mapping:
(I,II) = I
(II,II) = I
(III,II) = I
How do you know when your nomic died?
I'm a miracle worker, not a doctor.
Adding a traffic light, perhaps in the path of the glider.
On 21 February 2001 the
following move was applied:
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
Change Rule XXX
Because it would be better
If it read like this:
The game is complete when a nomic move
creates an exact monochrome
replica of a Space Invaders enemy in the Tableau, or
on 1 June 2001, whichever comes first.
putting a time-limit on the game.
On 26 February 2001 the
following moves were applied:
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
It just isn't fair
for the scribe and John Conway
to hog all the points
As such, create the following rule:
I am the avacado rule.
Whenever a mapping modification suggestion is applied, I am awarded
I point for each occurance of the word avacado in the rules.
I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules:
haiku is defined
to be any word not in
the official set
So now any change to the Rules at (lexically) Rule L or beyond must
begin with a word not in the Official Set, and the Scribe
has XIV points.
On 1 March 2001 the
following move was applied:
avocado The official spelling of the word "avocado" shall be "avocado."
All Rules containing one or more misspellings of the word "avocado"
(defined as a spelling of the word "avocado" that begins with the
letter "a" and contains exactly three consonants (which must include
at least two of the following: {v,c,d}) separated by single vowels)
shall be deemed invalid.
This gives the Scribe a total of XXI points, and throws Rule
LVI and the newly-minted Rule LX into an infinite-frequency
fluctuation between validity and invalidity, since the new Rule LX
declares both Rule LVI and itself to be invalid.
It also fires off a round of Conway's Life, and gives
John Conway his first XX points.
On 18 April 2001 the
following move was applied:
Bolivia Any Rule that invalidates itself shall be
interpreted and, if necessary, rewritten, by the Scribe
so it no longer invalidates itself, in as simple and
non-amendatory a manner as possible. (This should be
a Friday Rule, and should eliminate that pesky
infinite-cycle problem with Rule LX. D'oh!)
This created a new Friday Rule, Rule LXII, and
gave the Scribe a total of XXVIII points.
The scribe, as instructed by the new Rule,
inserted the word "other" into the existing
Rule LX, changing "All Rules" into "All other Rules",
ending the fluctuation, and causing Rule LVI
to be deemed invalid.
On 28 May 2001 the
following move was applied:
I suggest the following modification(s) to the Mapping:
Set Member 8,8 of the offical domain to 1
And I cannot think of an appropriately witty pun
How fun
which sabotaged the glider.
The Scribe also noted that future Rule Change Suggestions, in
order to be accepted, should actually describe a change to the Rules,
rather than simply giving without explanation the text of a
new Rule (e.g. "Add a new Rule reading 'foo'", rather than
simply "foo").
On 1 June 2001 the Game ended (per Rule XXX), although
this was not remarked upon until
June 5th.
The final status of Game Two was:
The Rules:
Rule II
The Official Domain consists of ordered pairs of
integers between zero and XV (inclusive);
the Official Range consists of
the integers zero and I; the Official Mapping consists of a mapping from the

clearly marked as a move, and containing either a Rule Change
Suggestion, or a Mapping Modification Suggestion.
Or so they would have you believe.
Rule VIII A Rule Change Suggestion consists of the
string "I suggest the following change(s) to the Rules" (or
reasonable equivalent), followed by a clear and explicit
description of one or more changes to one or more existing

creates an exact monochrome
replica of a Space Invaders enemy in the Tableau, or
on 1 June 2001, whichever comes first.
Rule XXXII
